Volunteer Communications and Stakeholder Engagement

About the role


 To support The Solar Drift Project’s communications and stakeholder engagement activities as part of a small volunteer team, helping ensure consistent messaging, strong visibility, and constructive relationships with partners and stakeholders. 

Key responsibilities

We are building a small volunteer team to support communications and stakeholder engagement. Volunteers may contribute to one or more of the following areas. Please indicate in your application which role (s) you are interested in supporting based on your skills and experience.


(1) Communications and content development:  Supporting the development and implementation of a basic communications strategy aligned with the organisation’s vision, mission, and core value proposition.   This may include crafting clear narratives around floating solar, water–energy–food systems, and community impact, as well as contributing to written content, website updates, newsletters, and other communication materials.
 

(2) Social media and digital engagement:   Supporting external communications across digital platforms. This may include assisting with newsletters, website updates, social media content, and presentations to help increase visibility and engagement.  
 

(3) Stakeholder research and partnership outreach:   Identifying potential partners and collaborators aligned with the organisation’s mission. This may include assisting with outreach preparation, conducting background research, and supporting stakeholder engagement activities.
 

(4) Events and collaboration support:    Assisting with the preparation of stakeholder briefings, reports, and public-facing materials for meetings, presentations, or collaborative activities. This may also include helping coordinate messaging across the team to ensure consistency and accuracy.
 

Requirements

 Core requirements (for all volunteers):


  • Commitment of approximately 4–6 hours per week, with flexibility and occasional peak periods. Engagement will be reviewed every two months.
     
  • Background, education, or demonstrated experience in communications, public relations, development, sustainability, journalism, development studies, environmental studies, or a related field.
     
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with fluency in English.
     
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and collaborate in a small remote team.
     
  • Access to a reliable internet connection and basic software tools (email, MS Word, PowerPoint, Canva, Google Docs, and social media platforms).
     
  • Professional integrity, reliability, confidentiality, and a collaborative mindset.


  • Ability to provide references or undergo vetting if required for donor or government interactions
     

Candidates without formal degrees but with relevant professional or volunteer experience in communications, stakeholder engagement, or nonprofit work are also encouraged to apply.



 Additional skills by area of contribution: 


(1) Communications and content development 

  • Strong writing and storytelling ability.
     
  • Experience developing articles, reports, blog posts, newsletters, or website content.
     
  • Ability to translate technical concepts into clear and accessible language.
     
  • Portfolio of written work is an advantage.


 

(2) Social media and digital engagement

  • Experience managing or supporting social media accounts or digital campaigns.
     
  • Basic graphic or visual communication skills (e.g., Canva).
     
  • Understanding of digital engagement strategies or content scheduling tools.
     
  • Digital marketing or social media certifications are an advantage.


 

(3) Stakeholder research and partnership outreach

  • Ability to conduct background research and stakeholder mapping.
     
  • Interest in renewable energy, sustainability, climate adaptation, or community development.
     
  • Strong organisational and communication skills.
     
  • Experience working with or understanding government, NGOs, research institutions, or community organisations is an advantage.
     

 

(4) Events and collaboration support

  • Ability to help coordinate meetings, webinars, workshops, or collaborative activities.
     
  • Experience preparing briefing materials, presentations, or reports.
     
  • Strong organisational and coordination skills.


 

Desirable experience:

  • Experience within the renewable energy, sustainability, agriculture, or climate adaptation sectors.
     
  • Familiarity with African contexts related to renewable energy, community development, or environmental initiatives.
     
  • Experience in corporate, NGO, or nonprofit communications.
